Uniforms

The Evzone Uniform is universally known and it firstly appeared after the 1821 War of Independence from the Turkish Occupation. After the Revolution of 1821, the uniform of the Evzone was officially established as the uniform of all chieftains and fighters of the Revolution. The Evzone Uniform has 400 pleats, connoting the 400 years of Ottoman occupation.

The Evzone Uniform (i.e.Fustanella) is used only on Sundays, National Holidays and on special occasions such as the reception of foreign dignitaries.

The other parts of the Evzone Uniform are:

  • The Phareon. It is the Evzone hat. It is made of red baize with the national emblem in front. In past years, the Royal Crown was placed there. Characteristic part of the Phareon is the long black tassel. It is considered to symbolize The Tear of Christ on the Cross.
  • The Shirt. It is white with very wide sleeves. Generally the white color that dominates the Evzone Uniform symbolizes the pureness of the National Battles.
  • The Phermeli . It is the waistcoat of the Evzone Uniform and is the most difficult piece to construct. At the back, from the shoulder to the waist, two pieces stand out. They are embroidered with white and gold threads and portray designs of folkloric significance. One of those designs are the letters “X” andO which stand for the words “Xristianos Orthodoxos” , meaning Christian Orthodox. The yellow stripes distinguish the rank of the Evzone. Two stripes are for Sergeant and one for the Corporal.
  • The Fringes. They are blue and white, thus standing for Greece’s National Symbol, the Greek Flag.
  • The Garters. They are black and made of silk
  • The Tsarouchia. They are the traditional shoes of the Evzones. They are red, made of leather and on the sole are 60 to 120 nails according the size of the shoe. This makes Evzones movement very impressive, especially at the time of the Steps. On average Tsarouchia wait 3.5 kg. Most characteristic parts are the black tassels at the point of the Tsarouchi. At the time the Evzone Regiments were combative parts of the Greek Army, the tassels hid a sharp object which was used in melee battles.
  • The Leather Belt. It constitutes the cartridge belt as well as is the bayonet case of the Evzone.
  • The Breeches. They are white and 100% cotton and the Evzones use two for each leg for perfect fit and image.
  • The Inside Garter. It is leather-made and holds the stockings in position. Basically, they serve the same purpose as the suspenders but for obvious reasons the Evzones fail to mention them.
  • The Gun. The gun that is used is the Μ1 Garrand. It is the most difficult piece not only for its weight but for the physical pressure on the body of the Evzone. In order for the movement of the Evzone to be commanding in the “Right Shoulder Arms!’ motion, the Evzone hits the gun with great force on his shoulder, to produce noise.  At the first services the left shoulders of all Evzones are bruised.
  • The Bayonet. The Bayonet is mounted on the gun throughout the duration of the service, as in the parades.

Besides the shirt, the waistcoat and the fringes, all the other parts are used in Ntoulamades.

Evzone Officer’s Uniform:

Their full dress uniform is distinguished from that of enlisted men, both from the length of the Fustanella as well as from other characteristics.

The Uniform is constituted of:

  • The Tuzlukia (garters)
  • The Stavalia (red boots)
  • The Breech. Red, long trousers
  • The Garters. They are blue
  • The Phareon. This hat is bigger than the one of the Evzones and has the rank of the officer in front, below the national emblem.
  • The Sword. Exact copy of the chieftain of 1821
  • The Phermeli (waistcoat)

On other days, depending on the season (winter or summer), a similar outfit is used. In winter Evzones use Ntoulama which is dedicated to the Macedonian Battles and is made of thick blue felt. During the warmer months, the summer chino Ntoulama is used.

In various events, the Cretan and Pontiac uniforms are used so as to honour the fighters of the Greek islands and the fighters of Pontos.

For the very cold winter nights (not allowed to be worn during the day, no matter how cold it is) there is the Kapa(cape), which is made from thick blue felt.

The uniforms are all hand made, by special craftsmen in workshops within the barracks of the Presidential Guard. The construction of an Evzone Uniform (30 meters of white material) takes 80 days to be made. The Evzones waistcoat alone takes up to one month to be sawn. The traditional manufacture of Tsarouchia is interesting as well.
