One of the most famous Regiments of Evzones is the 5/42 Evzones Regiment, which has linked its name with moments of glory and heroism.

The 5/42 was created in 1912 based in Lamia and consisted of six orders. The regiment took part in almost all the battles of the Balkan Wars in 1912-13.

In 1918-19 the 42^nd Evzones Regiment  with commander officer Nikolao Plastira, was driven by foreign interests in Russia to provide assistance to the old regime and fight the October Revolution(1917). On fighting in front of the Dnieper River, many valuable lives of our Evzone compatriots were lost. When the French who led the campaign left Russia, the expeditionary party of General Nider where the Evzones came under, withdrawn to Romania. From Galazi of Romania they sailed the Black Sea, the Hellespont and the East Aegean Sea  and landed in Asia Minor.

In Asia Minor campaign under the administration of Nikolaos Plastiras the 5/42 reached the peak of its glory. The heroism and the vehemence of the Evzones made the 5/42 known to the Turks by the name Saitan Asker(Devil’s Army) Through its advance, the regiment reached Kale-Grotso  beyond Saggario. During the collapse of the front lines, the Regiment under the administration of Nikolaos Plastiras succeeded in retreating in full battle order and picking up soldiers from tattered units. With its resistance to the Turks, they gave  the opportunity to many refugees to flee.

Also at the time the Regiment released its own newspaper , the ‘Founta”(tassel). The ‘Founta’ was firs manuscript in February the 20^th in 1922, in six pages from plain paper with stripes in expense of the Regiment. The title of the sheet was bicolor with red and blue pencil, a red fez and blue long tassel.

And if Plastiras as the Commander of the heroic Regiment was loved so much both by the refugees who gave their children his name, this was not the case with Colonel Dimitrios Psarros. The Colonel in 1942 organized the Regiment to resist the fascist occupiers. Ο Συνταγματάρχης το 1942 οργάνωσε το Σύνταγμα για να εναντιωθεί στον φασίστα κατακτητή. He gave many heroic battles in the mountains of Central Greece against the Conqueror and the Regiment once again became the Devil’s Army.  But what Turks and Bulgarians failed in Balkan Wars, what the Turks were unable to do in Asian Minor and Germans and Italians, did the Greeks themselves. The Regiment had a tragic end due to the treason of EAM-ELAS. Even worse was the end of Colonel Dimitrios Psarros whom his body was desecrated by the “patriotic fighters’ of EAM-ELAS.  
The retired Lieutenant General Kaimaras George in his book “The Chronicle Of A Sacrificial”, makes a clear description of the events that les to the slaughter of 300 young men.

With these feelings then I remembered the holocaust of the 5/42 Evzone Regiment in April of 1944 in Klima Doridos , which changed the course of our national history and world such because:

• In the interior of our country the ruthless massacre of the 300 braves of Colonel Psarros as painful, immoral and outrageous was, the more affected  the souls and the thoughts of all the Greeks, who understand the purpose of existence of EAM-ELAS , equipped themselves with courage, virtue and  valor to fight and destroy them.
• Abroad the direct broadcast by the BBC in England of this fact, which was unanimously defined by the English Parliament as the first episode of the 3^rd World War , which contributed to raising early a wall of resistance of people against communism and to save humanity from it and unfortunately foreigners quickly forgotten the fact after widely using it for their interests in expense of the Greeks.
