The word Evzone is first found in Homer, and derives from "εὖ"+"ζώνη", meaning the "well-girt" men.

Since the creation of the Greek Army ,Tsoliades were the elite soldiers. The Tsoliades remain a symbol of bravery and the selection of soldiers to deploy the Presidential Guard is even currently based on both physical and spiritual criteria.

The candidates are being selected with the following criteria:

• Height over 1.88 meters (with a maximum to 2.05)
• Excellent physique shaping
• Excellent senses and sanity
• Character and Morals
• Faith in the mission of the Evzone
