Athens. The moment they were getting to Acropolis so as to replace the Greek flag with the German one, the Evzone took the Greek flag down, wrapped himself in it and fell into the void so as to keep the Greek flag away from the German hands. Although the Greek Flag became the cerement of Kosta Koukidis, it didn’t fall in the conquerors’ hands.

If you ever stand on Herod Atticus street or V.Sofias avenue, you will see that from the place that the Evzones walk through, on the flagstones of the pavement, a white trail is formed by the stamping of the rustic shoes. This path, according to the Evzones, symbolizes the way towards the liberation struggles of our nation.

 In 1994 this symbolic path on Herod Atticus street was covered by cars due to an exhibition. The change Corpora,l without second thoughts, ordered the Evzones whom he was accompanying for the discharge at the Presidential Mansion , to walk over the cars without bolting their route. The same happened with the Evzones  he accompanied back to the camp. In fact, for one of the cars they had to go over its roof.

One summer night, at about four a.m. in the morning, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier came a couple with their two children. They both were Greeks, born and raised in the USA. They had just arrived in Greece and their first visit was at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, so as to see the Evzones. This alone proves the historic value of Evzones for all Greeks.
